PCI-Express Riser/Extender Test

This was the most time-consuming part of this review. In order to have valid results, we needed a lot of benchmarks runs. Each GPU score is an average of 5 runs. We tested two cards: MSI GTX 1080 TI GAMING X and MSI GTX 1050. The main difference between the two is how they are powered. The first card has external power connectors, while the other is only powered by PCIe slot. Each card had power limit and temperature limit set to the maximum value. The process was automated and we collected data from four benchmarks: 3DMark Fire Strike Performance, Extreme, Ultra and Superposition in 1080p Extreme preset. For GTX 1050 we replaced FireStrike Ultra to Sky Diver and Superposition was set to medium preset.

To keep the variance comparable for each benchmark we calculated the percentage of variance to the average score. This gave us easy to understand values. Basically, anything above 1% should be considered unstable.

So as you can see, you are much likely to encouter unstable operation with a graphics card powered only by the PCIe slot.
