GALAX GeForce RTX 3080 10GB SG Review

CONCLUSION

The Galax RTX 3080 SG fails to impress and fails to disappoint. It’s definitely not an expensive-looking card but sure it is eye-catching, not necessarily for a good reason. The design is kept in black and white, with some accents being a little too apparent. The design of the backplate could have been more toned down, those white stripes really do not make this card look any better. Galax could have also changed the “What’s your game” logo with GALAX.

The card features an auxiliary fan that is installed on the back. This is a really cool idea that makes sense for a vertical mounted graphics card since the fan is not visible. In any other scenario, this fan makes the card look rather strange, especially with the cable hanging from the card. It would have probably made more sense to just make the card thicker so that the 4th fan wouldn’t be needed anyway.

GALAX has bundled the card with a VGA support bracket, which is normally a feature of premium cards. Obviously, the card does not need it when installed vertically but once installed horizontally the card will avoid sagging. Such installation, however, will occupy nearly 5 slots on the board, if the auxiliary fan is also installed.

Even without the 4th fan, the cooling solution was very efficient. We have tested the cooling with and without the auxiliary fan. It appears that the fan makes more sense in close cases, as our open test bench didn’t really see lower temperatures when the fan was in use. The good news is that the fans won’t even spin unless a certain temperature target is reached, although in my long-term testing I have seen fans spin quite often even when no game was running in the background.

Performance-wise we are looking at a great 4K and 1440p framerate. We have also tested 1080p gaming, but in most cases, it was not even worth adding to the charts, since the card was clearly more capable. In terms of overclocking, we are left with a power limit of 340W, which is even lower than the Founders Edition. This is definitely not a card for overclocking, but most users should be happy with the 1-Click option that is available with the GALAX Xtreme Tuner utility.

The GALAX RTX 3080 SG is clearly a product that has no aspiration to compete with the upper-high and premium segments. For those GALAX has EX Gamer and HOF series, which come at a higher price. If you really want RTX 3080 and this is the only card that is available, then you definitely will not regret the purchase.
