Qualcomm seems to be having difficulty keeping a lid on the details of their upcoming next-generation Snapdragon chips. Following the full disclosure of their Snapdragon X Elite SoC for PCs, there’s a new leak featuring the 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC designed for flagship phones.

The website MSpowerser has shared comprehensive specifications and images from the presentation of this new chip. These details confirm Qualcomm’s strong emphasis on AI, which appears to be a primary focus for this generation of products. But it’s not just AI, the comapny is also upgrading the graphics capabilities of this new mobile processor, promising “console-defying” and “premium level” ray tracing features with support for Unreal Engine 5.2, according the report.

For the previous generation chip, marketing efforts were centered around Vulkan 1.3 support, but for the new generation, the focus is on Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen support. Qualcomm claims a 25% increase in performance and a 25% boost in efficiency. Additionally, the new chip will support Snapdragon Game Super Resolution upscaling technology, allowing for up to 8K resolution with a single spatial pass. Notably, the chip also boasts AV1 decoding capabilities.

The Hexagon NPU (Neural Processing Unit) has seen an improvement, offering up to a 98% increase in speed and a 40% enhancement in efficiency compared to its predecessor. It now supports an 10 billion parameters and can handle more than 20 tokens per second with Meta Llama2/Baichuan LLM models.

The Kryo CPU has received a frequency boost as well. The ‘prime’ core can now reach speeds as high as 3.3 GHz, which is 100MHz higher than the SD 8Gen2 SoC. Furthermore, the five ‘performance’ cores have been upgraded to reach up to 3.2 GHz, representing a significant 400 MHz increase, and an extra core has been added to this category. The previous triple ‘efficient’ core setup has been replaced with a dual-core configuration, which can now go up to 2.3 GHz. Qualcomm asserts that their new CPU core will be 30% faster and 20% more efficient than its predecessor.

The first phones featuring SD 8 Gen3 should launch next year, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra named as one of them.
