NVIDIA now wants to sell RTX 3060 Ti cards only with GDDR6X memory
According to Chinese media outlets, NVIDIA intends to completely replace RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6 graphics cards with the upgraded GDDR6X variant.
Last month NVIDIA officially introduced GeForce RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X and GeForce RTX 3060 with 8GB memory. The company confirmed that these are ‘additional options’ from board partners that should provide more choice to gamers.
What is important to note is that both SKUs were also officially launched globally by all major board partners – indicating that this launch is not limited to any region, which is typically the case for ‘slightly’ modified cards.
According to MyDrivers, NVIDIA and Add-in-Card partners (AICs) are to gradually replace and eventually cancel the GDDR6 version of the RTX 3060 Ti SKU. The plan it to replace existing RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6 stock with GDDR6X variants. Importantly, this GDDR6X upgrade is to offered at the same price as the original GDDR6 model, which is 2999 RMB (~$419).
Thus far there is no indication that NVIDIA would replace RTX 3060 12GB with 8GB model, and to be honest, it wouldn’t really make sense. However, the RTX 3060 Ti featuring faster memory, and as a result, 35% higher bandwidth, is not something consumers should ignore.
The release of new GeForce RTX 3060 series is a clear sign that NVIDIA has no plans to launch RTX 4060 series anytime soon. The upgraded models will cement the company’s presence in the mid-range GPU market now saturated with new Radeon RX 6750 XT and Intel Arc A7 GPUs as well.
