MSI strategy slowly shifts to DDR5 motherboards
It is reported by Chinese sources close to MSI manufacturing process, that the company has decided to phase out some DDR4 motherboard series.
The board makers have every reason to focus on DDR5 technology as current Intel and AMD fans shift their interest to modern memory standards. This is why both companies are now working on supporting faster kits or modules with non-standard capacities. It should also be mentioned that DDR5 memory has become much cheaper, especially the slowest kits.
According to the new report, that at least four MSI Z790 motherboards with older DDR4 standard are to be discontinued. As we know, both the 600 and 700 series support either DDR4 or DDR5 technology. This gave customers a chance to upgrade at a lower cost without investing into new memory technology.
It is claimed that once the inventory of these Intel 700 DDR4 motherboards is sold out, there are no plans to restock them with new units. Reportedly, that the following motherboards are to be phased out:
- MPG Z790 EDGE WIFIDDR4
- PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR4
- PRO Z790-P DDR4
- MAG B760 MORTAR DDR4
A quick check confirms that this is not the full list of Z790 DDR4 motherboards. MSI has both Z790-P and PRO with or without Wi-Fi support, but this list does not confirm that every variant will be discontinued. Furthermore, there is also as MAG Tomahawk design, which would apparently not be affected by this change.
When it comes to the B760 series, only one board is mentioned out of 12 boards currently listed on the MSI website. It probably makes sense to keep the mid-range series as they are because mid-range builds are more likely to feature older standards than high-end systems.
The report states that the reason for this change is MSI’s plan to focus on DDR5 strategy moving forward. The company has not confirmed such plans though.
