MSI GE76 Raider is a perfect gaming mining laptop

In those troubling times where all graphics cards are available at inflated prices or not available at all, MSI thought it was a good idea to promote their latest high-end gaming laptop – GE76 Raider – for mining.

While everyone has the right to do whatever they wish with their hardware, the active promotion of cryptocurrency mining by a company that is also affected by a shortage of GPUs, just shows how detached from reality some people can be.

MSI has posted a blog entry about mining with their new gaming laptop. This rather short article is the first part of a series about a one-month mining experiment. The purpose of this ‘experiment’ is to determine whether it is profitable to use a gaming laptop for mining.

The author has provided initial mining performance estimated at 52.8 MH/s with the DaggerHashimoto algorithm with NiceHash mining software. This is equal to a desktop RTX 3070 graphics card, which would have been otherwise a very profitable option if not for the very high price of this GeForce SKU on a market right now.

The RTX 3080 in GE76 Raider is actually one of the few actual Max-P variants available on the market. This means that this GPU has the highest possible TDP set by MSI (in this case 155W).  The author has not provided any data on the settings that were used, but it is common for miners to adjust power limit and memory clock speeds for better profitability.
