The company has just announced the MTT S70 desktop GPU featuring cut-down specs compared to the S80 released a few months ago. Unfortunately, MTT graphics are not powerful enough to compete with anything AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel currently offer. That is despite rather impressive specs on paper.

The S70 features 3584 MUSA cores and has a boost clock up to 1.6 GHz. This is a downgrade from 4096 cores and 1.8 GHz boost on the S80. As a result, the S70 offers 3.2 TFLOPs (22%) lower compute performance.

However, it is not just the GPU specs that were scaled down. The card offers an unusual 7GB of GDDR6 memory offering 392 GB/s of maximum bandwidth. This means the GPU has a 224-bit interface which is not very common on graphics cards.

Furthermore, one of the key features and marketing bullet points for the MTT series is gone. The S70 supports PCIe Gen4 x16 interface, unlike the S80 with PCIe Gen5 support (currently the only desktop gaming GPU that offers such a feature).

By far the biggest problem with MTT graphics is questionable support for modern technologies such as tessellation (not fully supported) or DX11 multithreading. The platform doesn’t even support the DX12, Vulkan or OpenGL programming interfaces, which severely restricts the capabilities of this architecture. However, the company is actively developing software, and more and more game support is being added with each driver release. The release of another MTT GPU will not solve this problem.

The company still needs to fix the idle power consumption and unlock the full potential of its architecture. Currently, the S80 is just about competing with NVIDIA’s 30W GT 1030 graphics, easily one of the slowest GeForce cards on sale.
