Intel Core i5-14600K makes an informal debut

It appears that Chinese media ECSM are now in possession of Intel’s upcoming 14-core Core i5-14600K CPU.

We are just under a week away from the official debut of the upcoming desktop processor series, known as the 14th Gen Core, also referred to as Raptor Lake Refresh. Intel is preparing to introduce six SKUs, including both K and KF models. Among these processors, the i5-14600K, a 14-core CPU, is noteworthy as it will be the most affordable unlocked model with a 125W power rating.

As reported by ECSM, this processor is indeed equipped with 6 P-Cores and 8 E-Cores, totaling 14 cores and 20 threads. This configuration mirrors that of the Core i5-13600K, with the only difference being a slightly lower maximum clock speed. Instead of the previous 5.1 GHz, Intel has increased it by 200 MHz to reach 5.3 GHz. This represents the highest clock speed achievable by this CPU for its Performance cores, without relying on Turbo Boost 3.0 or Thermal Velocity Boost technology support.

It’s important to highlight that the CPU under discussion is identified as an Engineering Sample (ES). This designation implies that its performance may differ from the final version of the CPU. In the current context, the CPU appears to have no trouble maintaining a clock speed of 5.3 GHz, albeit with a CPU package power consumption reaching 160W. ECSM has remarked that the voltage seems to be somewhat high, exceeding 1.4V+. However, this could be attributed to this specific sample or the testing platform, and it’s worth noting that manual adjustments can still be made.

As for actual testing, we now have one of the initial Cinebench 2024 scores for the Raptor Lake Refresh. A preliminary examination of the CB 2024, CB R23, and CPU-Z test results reveals the following:

Core i5-13600K vs Core i5-14600K:

  • Cinebench R23:
    • ST: 2021 → 2027 (0%)
    • MT: 24528 → 25270 (3%)
  • Cinebench 2024:
    • ST: 115 → 124 (8%)
    • MT: 1255 → 1430 (14%)
  • CPU-Z:
    • ST: 819 → 868 (6%)
    • MT: 9847 → 10250 (4%)

Only for reference. Results will vary depending on configuration.

The CPU shows up to a single digit increase on average, a boost that can possibly be achieved by manually overclocking Core i5-13600K CPU.

The i5-14600K is scheduled for release on October 17th. While Intel has not officially disclosed the pricing for this CPU, it is anticipated to be very close, if not identical, to the pricing of the 13600K, considering the improvement in performance.
