Intel to refresh Tiger Lake-U, meet Tiger Lake-R

Intel confirmed it will be refreshing its ultra-low power Tiger Lake CPUs.

In 2021 Intel will be launching multiple architectures: Rocket Lake, Jasper Lake, Ice Lake Xeon, Alder Lake, and Tiger Lake-H. The Tiger Lake series are now divided into four groups, but according to AnandTech, that list is soon to be increased to five. The site has confirmed with Intel that the company will launch Tiger Lake-Refresh. The series is to provide a minor frequency increase over the Tiger Lake-U series.

According to AnandTech, Intel is currently not planning a refresh of any other Tiger Lake architecture. However, we have already seen leaks on H35 parts refresh such as Core i7-11390H, so we are not sure whether the AnandTech report is inaccurate or the leaks are based on wrong information.

Just today we have learned that Tiger Lake-H(45) series will likely be released in two weeks, as first notebook makers have begun teasing their upcoming products featuring the architecture. Meanwhile, the refresh of TGL-U shouldn’t be expected till at least the third quarter. In the second half of the year, Intel will also be launching its Alder Lake mobile series, so the TGL-R series might appear at a similar time serving the lower end of the mobile Intel CPU spectrum.
