Half-Life 2 mod with RTX

Igor Zdrowowicz is a modder currently working on a ‘HL2RTX’. This is a mod of the all-time classic Valve Half-Life 2 game that adds path tracing thanks to NVIDIA software.

The first mod showcase is dated before NVIDIA announced that RTX Remix would be open source. The modder is using Portal RTX Remix binary to achieve these results. One might expect that with the code now being open source to all modders and game developers, the results will be even more spectacular in the future.

The RTX Remix is a software modding platform for DirectX 9 and DirectX 8 games. It adds all next-gen graphics technologies and visuals to games that would otherwise never look this great. The process simplifies the game-enhancing process with the power of AI-powered tools. Developers and modders can remaster older games with higher quality textures, a new lighting system or by adding ray tracing and resolution upscaling tech like DLSS.

Half-Life 2 is an old game that can run on anything these days. With Igor’s RTX mod, the game now runs path tracing, so easily the most GPU-intense technology is now available in games. The modder does not reveal how taxing the technology is in the game, however, the video embedded above shows rather smooth gameplay at 1080p resolution.

Unfortunately, there is no link to download the mod yet, but it is probably too early to expect working games just two days after the release of RTX Remix to the public.
