AMD next-generation CPUs already have compatible coolers

AMD Genoa and Raphael might be here yet, but there are appropriate cooling solutions for these Zen4 based processor series already.

Cool Server already lists as many as 9 coolers for AMD SP5 and AM5 sockets. What is important to note is that those are not consumer cooling solutions, but for server installations. The solutions are either passive, relying on server chassis airflow, or featuring their own fans which typically for these types of configurations can be quite loud. In this case, we are looking at 44 to 64 dBA.

AMD AM5 (LGA1718)

AMD Ryzen “Raphael” processors are next-generation consumer series featuring Zen4 microarchitecture. The series will not only require a new AM5 socket, but also new DDR5 memory technology, and as a result entirely new motherboards. While AMD is saying farewell to the AM4 generation, both motherboard makers and cooling companies are working hard to be ready for Raphael’s launch, which is now expected in the second half of 2022. Despite relatively distant launch, the specs of the AM5 socket were known for a good while now. More recently they were featured in the Gigabyte leak. This is when we learned that AMD might introduce a 170W TDP SKU requiring liquid cooling.

Cool Server’s solutions peak at 240W with the active fan design, while passive coolers peak at 210W. Those coolers are intended for ‘rectangular AM5’ motherboards.

AMD SP5 (LGA6096)

The EPYC 7004 Genoa CPUs will measure 76×80 mm according to previous leaks. Those processors will use the SP5 socket which is also known as LGA6096. It was revealed through Gigabyte leak that EPYC Genoa CPUs may have a peak power of 700W for 1 ms and 440 for 10 ms. The cooler designs showed by Cool Server peak at 400W thermal dissipation under sustained load.
