Path Tracing coming to Cyberpunk 2077 on April 11th

NVIDIA and CD Projekt Red today confirmed the release date of the new patch.

The new technology will be enabled next month, confirms CDPR at Game Developer Conference 2023 which is currently held in San Francisco. The game will become a fourth title to receive real-time path tracing technology following tech demos such as Minecraft, Portal or Quake.

NVIDIA claims that path tracing will revolutionize gaming by changing how games are created. Better visuals combined with cutting-edge technologies upscaling like DLSS3 could become a powerful tool for game developers who seek graphics that are indistinguishable from reality, says NVIDIA.

“This not only gives better visuals to the players but also has the promise to revolutionize the entire pipeline of how games are being created,” said Pawel Kozlowski, a senior technology developer engineer at NVIDIA.

Cyberpunk 2077 Path Tracing will be enabled in a new mode called Ray Tracing Overdrive. The game developer provided a sneak preview at GDC with full ray tracing enabled. Full ray tracing provides more natural colored lighting and corrects soft shadows.

NVIDIA expects more games to adopt real-time path tracing moving forward. The Cyberpunk 2077 game will become the first blockbuster title to really bring this technology to thousands of players. Unfortunately, only those with RTX GPUs (full requirements are yet to be shared).
