AMD 3D V-Cache coming to laptops?

AMD and ASUS might be working on a new system featuring Ryzen 7000X3D laptop series.

It seems that ASUS is working on a new gaming laptop, and various sources have recently started mentioning it. The laptop is the ROG STRIX SCAR 17, identified by the product code “G733PYV-LL046W,” and it has appeared in listings from multiple retailers. Notably, this upcoming system features an unannounced AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D laptop CPU.

Although ASUS and AMD have not officially released or confirmed the CPU yet, the product listing provides some interesting details. Specifically, it mentions a generous 128MB of L3 cache, which is characteristic of the X3D series. As of now, this particular laptop appears to be the only one with such specifications, and some retailers have even listed its price.

The initial product listings suggest that the Scar 17 will be a 17-inch gaming laptop equipped with 32GB of DDR5 memory and an RTX 4090 graphics card. When combined with the anticipated Ryzen 9 7945HX3D CPU, this laptop could potentially become one of the most powerful gaming laptops available in the market.

To give some context, the 7045HX series, codenamed Dragon Range, utilizes a desktop-class 16-core Zen4 configuration, similar to desktop series CPUs. The 7000X3D desktop CPUs have already showcased substantial improvements thanks to the inclusion of the 3D V-Cache technology. The implementation of this technology in laptops has been a long-awaited and much-desired feature for gamers. If this leak turns out to be true, AMD might finally have a winning card to reclaim its leadership in the mobile gaming market from Intel.

The system is now listed for 3904 GPB (with VAT) in the UK, which is definitely one of the most expensive laptops. If the Ryzen 9 SKU is indeed going to feature X3D for laptops, it would be even better if there was an 8-core part planned, preferably paired with more affordable GPUs.
