AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7985WX with 64 cores appears in first benchmark

First AMD Ryzen Threadripper with DDR5 memory support has been spotted

AMD’s Zen4-based HEDT systems have faced delays, but it is evident the company has shifted its focus toward the workstation PRO market segment rather than the enthusiast desktop market (HEDT). Consequently, the demand for new Threadripper processors is influenced more by OEMs like Lenovo rather than everyday consumers and enthusiasts.

In November of last year, AMD introduced its first Zen4 desktop CPUs, offering configurations with up to 16 Zen4 cores. Meanwhile, the upcoming Threadripper 7000 series, code-named “Storm Peak,” is expected to come with either 64 or 96 cores, depending on AMD’s decision to reuse EPYC 9004 dies for HEDT purposes.

Recent findings reveal a processor listed as the Threadripper PRO 7985WX, featuring 64 cores, suggesting there may also be a Threadripper 7995WX with even more cores. This discovery was made on the PugetBench website, where it appeared alongside AMD’s reference and validation board, known as BoulderGulch-STP.

Notably, the CPU is paired with eight DDR5-5600 memory modules, providing a total capacity of 256GB. This configuration implies the possibility of an LGA-6096-based Threadripper processor with support for 8-channel DDR5 memory and 128 PCIe Gen5 lanes. Additionally, AMD is reportedly working on an LGA-4844 based Threadripper variant, which would support quad-channel memory and 64 PCIe Gen5 lanes.

Given that final SKUs are now surfacing on benchmarking websites, it’s evident that AMD is in the advanced stages of developing the Threadripper 7000 series. Rumors suggest that these new Threadripper CPUs might be available around October, nearly a year after the debut of the desktop AM5 platform.
