Zen4-based Threadripper 7000 is finally escaping AMD labs

AMD is gearing up to launch its next-gen HEDT platform with Zen4 cores.

At last, there’s some insight into the long-awaited next-generation Threadripper, which has been overdue. As AMD approaches the one-year mark since unveiling the desktop Ryzen 7000 platform, it’s evident that the company hasn’t placed a significant emphasis on the HEDT series. Leaked information from various sources has led to conflicting details and dates.

Recent developments indicate that AMD has now assigned names and product codes (OPN) to at least three SKUs. These designations were recently discovered in a shipping manifest, as brought to attention by @harukaze5719:

The leak confirms a maximum thermal design power (TDP) of 350W for these CPUs, with all three seemingly sharing this specification. Moreover, it appears that these CPUs will utilize the AMD SP6 socket, a socket that is also intended for use in the AMD EPYC 8004 Siena series.

However, the leak falls short of fully clarifying whether these CPUs are part of the Threadripper PRO series or if they are aimed at gaming and consumer systems in the Threadripper HEDT line, as opposed to workstation-focused platforms. This uncertainty could shed light on why the PRO 7985WX, featuring 64 cores, was previously observed, potentially leaving limited room for core upgrades with a 7995WX model. It’s worth noting that the WX series has traditionally been associated with the PRO series, a trend that is likely to persist.

Based on limited information and rumors, the Threadripper PRO 7000 series codenamed “Storm Peak” might debut in late Q3.
