AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 next year?

Another month another rumor about Threadripper 5000.

Enthusiasts waiting for AMD’s HEDT platform update since November 2019, when the last Threadripper series launched, might actually need to wait another 3 months. According to AMD leaker Greymon55, the company is not expected to launch its Threadripper this year. The news comes after numerous reports about Threadripper 5000 launch dates, seemingly being delayed again and again. The latest rumor put the HEDT series codenamed “Chagall” launching in November, but this date may no longer be accurate.

AMD Threadripper 5000 which is to feature Zen3 microarchitecture has been expected since CES 2021. The latest update for the series arrived in the summer of last year when AMD introduced Threadripper PRO 5000 and the WRX80 platform to the retail channel. There have been no leaks on the 5000 non-PRO series just yet but the 5995WX and 5945WX SKUs, which are next-gen PRO series had already made an appearance a little over a month ago. Unlike the non-PRO SKUs, those were actually rumored to launch next year.

The TR 5000 series will not feature a higher core count than the existing 3000 series but will likely see an increased frequency over the “Castle Peak” series based on Zen2 architecture. The arrival of Chagall next year might suggest AMD will be using Zen3+ microarchitecture instead of Zen3. The former is expected to debut with the APU series Ryzen 5000 codenamed “Rembrandt” and possibly with Ryzen 5000XT SKUs at CES 2021.
