AMD first Ryzen mobile CPUs with chiplet technology are now available
With a two-week delay, AMD confirms that the Ryzen 7045HX series is now shipping.
While AMD is still preparing its Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” Zen4 and RDNA3 series for the mainstream market, the company announced that the flagship gaming processor series known as Ryzen 7045HX or “Dragon Range” series are now in stores.
The Dragon Range CPUs are a high-end processor series based on desktop Raphael silicon. It is, in fact, a third generation of AMD Ryzen HX series, featuring higher TDP than mainstream series, but the first generation to offer more than 8 cores.
The flagship Ryzen 9 7945HX SKU has 16 cores (with two 8-core chiplets), which just as many as the desktop R9 7950X SKU. The series is optimized for laptops with lower TDP ranging from 55W to 75W depending on configuration. The full series features four Ryzen models with 16, 12, 8 and 6 cores, but it appears that core counts are not yet available.

Unfortunately, the choice of Ryzen 7045HX systems is limited at this moment. In fact, only ASUS has launched its 7045HX laptop series yet, including ROG Zephyrus Duo 16, ROG Strix G17 and ROG Strix Scar 17. However, AMD confirms Dell Alienware 16, Lenovo Legion Pro 5 and 7 and upcoming MSI laptops are expected to launch in the coming weeks.

AMD is claiming that their flagship Ryzen 7945HX SKU is on average 10% faster than the Intel Core i9-13950HX processor. Although, this is not the flagship Intel part, it is still the full 24-core model with clock speeds just 100 MHz lower than the i9-13980HX CPU used by the most expensive laptops on the market.

This launch does not appear to have an official review coverage, which is never a good sign. Only in this case, the first preview of the 7945HX system has been very positive, especially when power efficiency is considered.
