AMD Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” series will not feature 3.0 GHz RDNA3 clocks

AMD lowers the altitude for Phoenix GPU

It is settled, none of the Phoenix APUs announced thus far will get 3.0 GHz iGPU out of the box.

This is a follow-up to our story about AMD changing the specs of the Ryzen 7040HS iGPUs on official website. The company has quietly reduced the clocks of their APUs by 200 MHz. At the time, this changed only affected the 7040HS series, while the 7040H models which were listed around the same time still had the higher clocks listed.

As it turns out, those 7040H models have now been reduced to the same iGPU clocks, effectively canceling any plans for 3.0 GHz iGPU in these chips. The clock speeds are the same for the H and HS variants, which means that there is not really much of a difference between both series right now.

Out of all 6 known Ryzen 7040 SKUs, the highest iGPU clock will be 2.8 GHz on 7940HS/7940H SKUs. Although these mobile APUs do not officially support overclocking, overclockers may find a way to increase this frequency back to 3.0 GHz as initially listed by AMD, especially with TDP is set to the highest level of 54W.

Officially, those upcoming Zen4 and RDNA3 APUs are launching this month, but AMD did not confirm any date yet.
