AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs, Zen4 for desktops
Today, AMD launches its newest desktop platform.
A day after a flood of independent reviews, today is the day AMD officially releases its Ryzen 7000 CPU series to the market. A total of four SKUs are launching today alongside AMD’s new X670 motherboard platform.
The series feature up to 16 cores and 32 threads and scale all the way down to 6 cores and 12 threads. The flagship Zen4 CPU called Ryzen 9 7950X offers a boost clock up to 5.7 GHz, while the 12-core 7900X goes up to 5.6 GHz, according to AMD official specs. The 8-core 7700X and 6-core 7600X aren’t that much slower, though, both offering 5.3 GHz+ clocks out of the box.
AMD 7000 CPUs are more than just a seasonal upgrade. The new processors, which are now using LGA AM5 socket, support the latest DDR5 memory and the fastest PCIe Gen5 interface for both the GPUs and storage. Unfortunately, both hardly if not completely unavailable right now.

Later today, Intel will unveil its 13th Gen Core “Raptor Lake” desktop series, which may pose a threat to the AMD offering by offering higher clocks and competitive pricing. Furthermore, Intel CPUs will not need a new platform (Intel 600-series motherboards are still supported) and they can still work with DDR4 memory. On the other hand, the latest series may just as well be the last for the LGA1700 socket, so clearly both platforms have their pros and cons.
