AMD FSR 2.2 is out

AMD has released the source code for its FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.2 upscaling technology.

At CES 2023, AMD announced an update to FSR 2 with better handling of the ‘high velocity ghosting’. This effect could be observed in games such as NFS Unbound or Forza Horizon 5, both already updated with FSR 2.2, AMD’s latest version of temporal upscaling technology.

Today AMD released source code for this tech, meaning all game developers can now use this data and samples to implement the tech into their software.

AMD is providing a handy chart with changes listed and how they impact final image quality. One of the changes will improve high dynamic range (HDR). Users should now expect fewer ‘fizzing’ artifacts and improved temporal stability (less flickering).

ChangeImpact
Changed how internal signals are stored and tonemappedFSR 2.2 should now be compatible with a wider set of high dynamic range inputs. Previously, some dynamic range could be lost in computation.
Depth logic modified to improve disocclusion detectionFSR 2.2 should reduce the level of “fizzing” artefacts seen during dissoclusions.
Accumulation logic overhauled to use temporal reactivityFSR 2.2 should reduce the level of “fizzing” artefacts seen during dissoclusions.
RCAS is now run without tonemappingFSR 2.2 should retain more dynamic range during the RCAS step.
Dilated reactive mask logic updated to use temporal motion vector divergenceThis is used to assist with our “locking” feature, and should reduce some cases of ghosting artefacts.
Improved luminance instability logic with historyFSR 2.2 should have improved temporal stability – i.e, less flickering on some objects.

Another feature that has been implemented is a new API debugger. This should simplify the integration process for game developers, although the transition from 2.0 to 2.1 or 2.2 is a much easier than coming from FSR 1.

AMD recommends rebuilding all integrations rather than simply swap the library files. The company also reminds developers that FSR 2.2 has changes to the Reactive Mask and Transparency & Composition Mask texture upscaling, which may require tweaking.

The maker of Radeon graphics cards confirms that AMD FSR 2 is already in confirmed for 110 games, and FSR 1 more than doubles this list to 250 titles.

AMD confirms that FSR 2.2 update should arrive as Unreal Engine plugin soon. Here’s a video showcase of FSR 2.2 in Forza Horizon 5:
