AMD most powerful mobile Radeon has been tested
The RX 7900M with Navi 31 GPU.
There is a noticeable time gap between the initial Radeon mobile product announcement and its actual availability, as is the case with the release of AMD Radeon RX 7900M for laptops. This difference is even bigger when it comes to high-end GPUs, which are usually meant for a select mobile system. The recently unveiled Radeon RX 7900M GPU falls into this category.
The RX 7900M stands as the flagship RDNA3 GPU designed for laptops. It is powered by the Navi 31 GPU, boasting 72 Compute Units (equivalent to 4608 cores), paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit memory bus. The card’s clock speed is reported to reach up to 2090 MHz and potentially demand as much as 180 watts of power.
The card’s specifications undoubtedly serve as its best asset, but it’s important to point out its limited availability. Right now, you can only get this GPU on Dell Alienware M18 systems. It’s not cheap, but that’s normal for Alienware system. Dell has chosen to equip this device with the highest-end AMD hardware, featuring an AMD Ryzen Dragon Range processor.

The configuration tested by GizmoSlipTech, who obtained a unit of this system for an early hands-on video, incorporates the 7945HX processor, not the X3D variant. It also features a 1920×1200 480Hz display, suggesting that one should not anticipate 1440p/2160p gaming benchmarks. The system is priced at $2799 in this configuration, though it is more affordable than the M18 with a Core i9-13900HX and RTX 4080 combination, which is listed at $2999
The initial benchmark shared by the reviewer is the 3DMark TimeSpy, although it’s worth noting that this benchmark is not even the Extreme preset. As a result, it may not provide a complete framework for comparison until additional benchmarks are made available.
A quick check with the official 3DMark ranking and the RX 7900M can be called a winner in comparison with RTX 4080 Laptop, which scores 18923 points. That’s not a big difference, only 4.3%, and 3DMark TimeSpy is no longer a modern benchmark, so the full story will only be revealed when we get new data on the gaming benchmarks. But those are coming, so stay tuned to his channel.
