The Phoenix2 is a smaller version of the original Phoenix silicon now used by most powerful AMD mobile systems, laptops, Mini-PCs and handheld consoles. The fact that AMD might introduce a smaller die based on Zen4 and RDNA3 architectures was not a secret at this point, though. However, the exact specs of such processors were only a domain of speculation.

As we reported earlier, AMD has seemingly confirmed that the Phoenix2 APU die is 137mm², so around 1/4 smaller than the original APU with 8 cores and 16 threads. The smaller Phoenix has reduced CPU core and GPU core counts, and it expected to be used by Ryzen 3/5 7040U series.

A first picture of the Phoenix2 APU has been shared over at Bilibili by known leaker Golden Pig Upgrade. The image shows that it’s using the same FP7 software as the original Phoenix. It should, however, be noted that Phoenix may also use a slightly larger package known as FP8 which has been revealed by the same leaker in May.

It is worth noting that not only has the CPU die undergone modifications, but there has also been a significant reduction in GPU cores, from 12 to 4. These alterations have contributed to a smaller die size and potentially reduced power requirements. Thus far, there have been no reports regarding potential changes to the AI core.

The AMD Phoenix2 architecture is set to be utilized by the forthcoming Ryzen 5 7540U and Ryzen 3 7440U processors, which are yet to be seen in commercially available laptops. It appears that AMD has already commenced shipping the smaller APU to OEMs, as evidenced by the accompanying image displaying both processors situated next to each other on a tray.
