AMD announces Ryzen 7040U series, but there is no launch date yet

The company decided to finally introduce the mobile Ryzen 7040U series, that’s despite nearly no availability of the 7040H series.

The 7040U series are low-power (15 to 30W) mobile series designed for lightweight laptops and handheld gaming consoles. AMD is introducing four new SKUs today featuring four to eight Zen4 cores and boost clock up to 5.1 GHz.

According to official slides, AMD is expecting incredible efficiency and ‘exceptional battery life’ from its low-power Phoenix series. The company invested a lot of effort into making the 7040U series more power efficient through smart power management features, especially when the device is unplugged.

There are four new SKUs: 7840U, 7640U, 7540U and 7440U, all based on the same architecture. They feature 8, 6 and 4 cores and turbo clocks speeds ranging from 4.7 to 5.1 GHz. More importantly, AMD promises base clock no lower than 3.0 GHz.

What gamers should be interested to hear is that the 7040U series features powerful RDNA3 GPUs featuring GPU clock up to 2.7 GHz. The series features Radeon 780M, 760M and 740M graphics with 12, 8 and 4 RDNA3 Compute Units respectively.

Today’s announcement comes just as AMD is facing trouble with Phoenix 7040H series, now delayed by 2 months. To make matters worse, AMD is today not communicating any release date for the 7040U series. However, given the close prolixity to Computex 2023 (starting end of this month), one should expect updates from OEM partners at the Taipei tech expo in the following weeks.
