AMD preparing yet another console chip for desktops?

We received photos of the upcoming 4800S Desktop Kit, possibly new varaint of a repurposed AMD SoC from a gaming console.

The photos that we received came with a brief list of specifications, such as a mention of Zen2 microarchitecture. This implies that the 4800S might be a higher-clocked 4700S Desktop Kit, or it could just as well be using a different SoC altogether.

As a reminder, the 4700S Desktop Kit features an Ariel SoC which is used by Sony for PlayStation 5 console. However, AMD is also making Zen2/RDNA(2) SoCs for Microsoft Xbox Series consoles. The 4800S could be using an Xbox chip, but we cannot confirm this at this time.

Assuming that the specs we have are correct, then there are some key differences between 4700S and 4800S. The 4800S has a PCI-Express 4.0 slot for discrete GPU, while the 4700S only supported Gen2. While the 4700S supported entry to mid-range GPUs, the 4800S supposedly supports Radeon RX 6600, which is being bundled with the new Desktop Kit.

Furthermore, the device is to feature M.2 slot for SSD and Wi-Fi card, which means that the device will finally be used as a proper desktop system. What should also be important to mention is that 4800S will support AM4 CPU coolers.

According to our information, the AMD 4800S Desktop Kit is to launch in the first quarter of 2022. It is being manufactured by MSI and it will be bundled with TUL (PowerColor) Radeon RX 6600 graphics card. We do not know if there are any other versions planned.
