AMD 3nm Zen5 APUs codenamed “Strix Point” rumored to feature big.LITTLE cores

AMD “Strix Point”: Zen5, 3nm, big.LITTLE

An interesting (and unverified) rumor about AMD Ryzen 8000 CPUs based on Zen5 architecture has been just shared Moepc.

According to the site, AMD is currently developing its Zen4 architecture codenamed Phoenix to launch in 2022. It is said that the information about Pheonix (upcoming Zen4 APUs) is pretty much known at this point. It would allegedly feature TSMC 5nm process and DDR5 support. The series is also rumored to feature RDNA integrated graphics.

More importantly, though, the site claims to have information on Zen5 architecture, allegedly codenamed “Strix Point”. The series would be manufactured using TSMC 3nm process and be part of the Ryzen 8000 series. The Strix Point is allegedly an APU series, so that would be Ryzen 8000G series to be precise.

The biggest change in comparison to Zen4 APUs would ARM’s big.LITTLE approach. This means that Zen5 would feature high-performance (big) and high-efficiency (small) cores, just as the upcoming Intel Alder Lake series. Moepc says that Zen5 CPUs would have up to 8 big cores and up to 4 small cores, which is fewer than Alder Lake.

Zen 5 APU “Strix Point” belongs to Ryzen 8000 series (at the time of writing), and it will adopt big.LITTLE like Intel’s Alder Lake and Raptor Lake, with 8 big Zen 5 cores and 4 little cores. It’s scheduled to be launched in 2024.

The site also claims that AMD has already set its targets for the graphics performance of Strix Point. It is said that Strix Point also brings major changes to the memory subsystem, but no disclosures have been made.

According to the report, AMD Zen5 “Strix Point” is set to launch in 2024, but as mentioned in the article, it is too early to talk about a platform 3 years from now, where a lot can change, especially under current circumstances where supply chains are heavily affected.
