AMD Threadripper 7985WX early sample spotted, uses SP6 socket

AMD’s unreleased Threadripper CPU with Zen4 cores shows up on the second hand market in China.

This could potentially be the initial glimpse of AMD’s Storm Peak CPU, the forthcoming Threadripper PRO series built on the Zen4 architecture. AMD has refrained from launching these CPUs for almost a year since they introduced their first Zen4 CPUs for consumers.

The leaked information unveils a processor employing the SP6 socket. Although it lacks the Threadripper branding, the seller on the Chinese black market describes it as such. The picture attached to the offer clearly lists AMD OPN core of 100-00000454, which is supposedly the upcoming Threadripper PRO 7985WX SKU. This model is said to boast an impressive 64 cores and 128 threads—a configuration closely resembling the current flagship model, the 5995WX.

The leak seems to corroborate previous speculations that this CPU will have a default TDP of 350W, marking a substantial increase compared to the Zen3-based 280W series. Moreover, AMD appears set to offer processors with even greater power, potentially reaching up to 96 cores and 192 threads. Additionally, there are reports of clock speeds soaring as high as 5.1 GHz.

The seller asserts that the CPU is functional and exhibits some signs of use. However, there arises a legitimate concern about whether this CPU can be effectively utilized on any data-center platform that features the same SP6 socket. The compatibility in this context appears rather doubtful. Otherwise, a prospective buyer might find themselves in possession of a CPU that is incompatible without a suitable motherboard.

Anticipations are high for AMD’s forthcoming introduction of a new TRX50 chipset and platform, which is expected to support the upcoming Threadripper 7000 series. This launch is projected to occur by the end of the year. This new platform will provide compatibility with the DDR5 memory standard and PCIe Gen5. The numerous leaks circulating over the past few weeks typically signal an imminent launch. Regrettably, AMD has not announced any events that could serve as a formal platform for the launch of the Zen4 Threadripper series.
