Acer increases power in their GeForce RTX 30 gaming laptops
Acer is now releasing new firmware for a large number of its gaming laptops which increases GPU power.
As many of you know, Total Graphics Power defines how much power can be utilized by the graphics subsystem exclusively in a laptop. Those values can be dynamically adjusted thanks to new technologies such as AMD Smart Shift or NVIDIA Dynamic Boost, which shift unused power from CPU to GPU.
TGP can play a big role in graphics cards performance. A lower-end SKU with higher TGP can often surpass a higher-end part, only because it wasn’t power-constrained through BIOS settings. NVIDIA has given notebook makers a lot of freedom in deciding which TGP variant should the mobile graphics card be set to. This has led to some interesting discoveries such as RTX 3070 Max-P (the full-fat version) outperforming the Max-Q variant by 30%. This is why choosing the right TGP variant is easily the most important thing to do when looking for a new gaming laptop. Luckily for us, NVIDIA has enforced notebook makers to disclose which TGP variant of RTX 30 GPU they are using.
Acer has confirmed it will launch new BIOSes for its Nitro 5, Helios 300, Triton 300, and Triton 300 SE gaming laptops with increased TGP. The difference is not significant in most cases (just 5W) but there are a number of designs that see an increase by 10W or even 15W. In fact, there is even one laptop that sees a 30W TGP increase for RTX 3060.
Our claim to gaming hardware is to offer a balance between the best possible CPU and GPU performance, volume and durability. Accordingly, we are pleased to be able to offer buyers and many of our existing customers improved graphics performance with the BIOS update.
