NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M spotted

Yet unreleased GeForce 344.77 drivers revealed new mobile graphics cards coming from NVIDIA.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M and GTX 960M

GeForce GTX 965M (13D9) is listed under the same Device ID tree as GTX 980M (13D7) and GTX 970 (13D8).

You might be wondering why is NVIDIA skipping GTX 960M in favor of GTX 965M. My theory (which of course may not be accurate) is that NVIDIA will launch GTX 960M together with desktop variant in January next year. Desktop model GeForce GTX 960 could be launched with new Maxwell silicon called GM206. Could the same thing happen to GTX 960M? That is yet to be answered.

GeForce GTX 965M is what NVIDIA came up with to satisfy the demand for new mobile cards. We all know notebook manufacturers are always eager to see new cards and series launched in frequent intervals. GeForce GTX 980M and GTX 970M are simply not enough to fill the gap between GTX 800M and GTX 900M series. In fact, only a small portion of notebook sales are based on these two chips. Usually it is the mid-range segment (with cards like x50M or x60M) series that is the most popular and most affordable for end user.

The listing below is taken from GeForce 344.77 drivers. You can see five new entries, from which three are clearly stating the codename of new card, and then there’s N16P-GX. Here I should tell you that GeForce GTX 860M processor was codenamed N15P-GX and Maxwell 900M series are using N16 nomenclature. So, N16P-GX could simply be GTX 960M.
