Last week I posted the pictures of the newest addition to Radeon R200 series – R9 280. Today AMD makes this card official.
AMD Radeon R9 280 is pure Radeon HD 7950 rebrand. The only difference is the GPU clock speed 933 MHz instead of 850 MHz. I doubt you will see any reference card (as shown on the slides) in stores. If I’m not mistaken, vven reviewers didn’t get them in this form. Review samples look just like HD 7950.
R9 280 has Tahiti PRO GPU with 1792 Stream Processors. Card is equipped with 3GB GDDR5 memory and 384-bit interface. Compared to HD 7950 the TDP has been dramatically increased to 250W (that’s 50W more than HD 7950). I find this ridiculous that mid-range card has a TDP of high-end opponent’s models.
Radeon R9 280 is targeting $279 price point which was so far reserved for GeForce GTX 760. According to AMD slides, new Radeon is 20% faster than GTX 760.
AMD Radeon R9 280 non-X launches today.
