AMD Radeon HD 8000 Series Codenamed Sea IslandsCodenamed
In late December, a rumor floated around the web saying that next series of Radeon GPUs would be called Sea Islands. Few days after that, SemiAccurate have denied that Sea Islands is the codename of Radeons 8000, saying that it is actually Canary Islands. According to the newest slide by AMD, SemiAccurate were wrong, because upcoming Radeon HD 8000 Series will be named Sea Islands.

While Southern Islands is only just beginning to roll out, a recently ex-AMD ASIC designer’s Linkedin profile revealed the possible codename for AMD’s next-gen GPU family – Sea Islands. Since now, we have the proof in official slide with roadmap of AMD’s processors.

Unlike the rather vague codenames of Northern Islands and Southern Islands, Sea Islands directly refers to the chain of islands on the USA’s Atlantic coast. We can thus expect the individual chips from the family codenamed along the lines of the prominent islands in the region.
