MSI today revealed to the world its latest overclocking-craving Hawk series graphics card, a model based on the Radeon HD 6870 which features a custom PCB, the Twin Frozr III cooler, and support for GPU, memory and VDDCI voltage adjustment.
The R6870 Hawk looks almost nothing like the reference Radeon HD 6870 since it has a an 8+2 phase power design (4+1 on ‘regular models) allowing for a higher power draw when overclocking, Military Class II components (Super Ferrite Chokes, Hi-c CAPs, Solid Capacitors) for a stable operation, APS (Active Phase Switching) for automatic phase control, voltage read points, and an OCP (Over Current Protection) unlocker which is useful for extreme overclocks.
The new Hawk also boasts the mentioned Twin Frozr III cooler (boasting five heatpipes – two are 8mm SuperPipes, a nickel-plated copper base and two 80mm fans with a new propeller blade design) which is claimed to be up to 7 dBA quieter (at load) than the reference solution, while also being more efficient.
