ATI Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX+

Battle For Mainstream Market Share

The battle between ATI and NVIDIA reached a tense moment today when ATI removed the gag order on the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card by more than a week.  NVIDIA was trying to spoil the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 by launching an ultra secret graphics card they have been working on for many months. NVIDIA wasn’t quite ready, so the GeForce 9800 GTX+ was rushed to the media this week where we had the card for less than 24 hours before it was offically announced this morning. Why are both companies in such a rush to get the cards to the market and at the same time? The answer is simple, they are priced between $199 and $229! This price point is critical to market share and is the bulk of what is sold to gamers and enthusiasts for the back to school shopping season. These are the sexy cards that offer the best price versus performance and will remain some of the most talked about cards for the rest of 2008.

NVIDIA is preparing GeForce 9800 GTX +

October 1st, 2008 No comments

Coming soon will present another model of the NVIDIA graphics cards, a series of 9 – new GeForce 9800 GTX +. From a technical point of view, the only difference in comparison with current GeForce 9800 GTX will be increased strong. In 9800 GTX + is to be strong core clock 700 MHz (675 MHz now), while strong cieniujących units could reach about 1,750 MHz (out of 1,688 MHz). Along with the appearance of new cards, NVIDIA also publishes a new, revised version of the drivers to be much more efficient than today’s.

What’s all this? As you guess, taking into account the forthcoming premiere of the major steps Radeon 4850 and 4870. The purpose of the premiere 9800 GTX + and new drivers, was to establish a direct fight with competing ATI, which are to be nearly as fast or faster than the current GeForce 9800 GTX. Interestingly, the prices will look like after a few weeks so fierce fighting. Prime Minister 9800 GTX + is scheduled for mid-July.

BFG provides chilled water GF 9800GTX

October 1st, 2008 No comments

The manufacturer announced that its latest GeForce 9800GTX graphics accelerator H2OC series will be sold to block water ThermoIntelligence. It was established as a result of cooperation between companies BFG and Danger Den. The solution will offer increased pre-strong unit of account and memory. Graphic processor core “aquatic” GeForce’a will work with a frequency of 780MHz, while the 256-bit 512MB of GDDR3 memory have been set up to work at a rate of 1160MHz (2320MHz effective) which offers bandwidth to 74.2GB / s. As a result of a factory tunningu clocks units cieniujących raised up to 1944MHz. It may be recalled that for a reference card from NVIDIA further value amounts to 675/1100 (2200) / 1688MHz. We have therefore to deal with a specific OC, which can be translated into clear performance in games and tests. Read more…

9800GTX – Premiere seriously?

October 1st, 2008 No comments

The first in April is not only in the Polish calendar date on which it gets different niewybredne jokes. As reported by service Fudzilla NVIDIA does not appear to assume this reality, and tomorrow plans to premiere the new GeForce 9800GTX cards. Although her debut was postponed from 25 March to early April, currently there are no indications for the next “slipping”. Are you sure?

GeForce 9800GTX card is to be built on the basis of the G92-400 chip, technology support 3-Way SLI and basically at the end the news. Does anyone tempted to connect up to three cards 9800GTX that we do not know but NVIDIA apparently feels the need. New “GF” most likely not make any breakthrough. Compared with the 8800GTS is to have a slightly raised strong clocks and memory – 675MHz, shadery 1688MHz, 1100MHz memory (256-bit).

PS. On the web site HardOCP, the first pictures of the “wonders”.

GeForce 9800 GTX

October 1st, 2008 No comments

Did not meet the concerns of those who do not believe that it is a graphics card can have its premiere just the first of April, so April Fool’s Day. Against certain plotkom, GeForce 9800 GTX officially saw daylight today.

As already mentioned, this is a card based on the same chip, which refreshed 8800 GTS 512 MB (G92), but with a slightly raised timing clocks and memories. Compatibility with DirectX remains at 10.0, the card supports PureVideo HD technology, 3-Way SLI and Hybrid Power.

The new 9800GTX will be equipped with a strong GPU at 675 MHz with shaderami clock 1688MHz, 256-bit memory 1100 MHz (in most papers will be its 512 MB) and dwuslotowe cooling. Looking at these parameters, we can see that the new cards with the “9″ are only slightly faster than the 8800 GTS 512MB. However, is quite attractive price, which fluctuates around 1,000 zlotys.

PCPer NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB Preview – G92b at 55nm

July 20th, 2008 No comments

I started a term when the 9800 GTX was first released known as YANL: Yet Another NVIDIA Launch.  Basically it’s a derogatory term poking fun at a company that produces a LOT of different brands and products; some with very little separating them from a technical perspective.

Yesterday news started leaking about a new GPU from NVIDIA called the GeForce 9800 GTX+ – essentially an overclocked G92 part built on a new 55nm process technology that will sell at a LOWER price than current 9800 GTX cards on the market.  Interested yet?

NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB Details

We have already discussed the 9800 GTX+ card and analyzed images of the die in some recent news posts, so I’ll be reusing that data below.

Overclocking The GeForce 9800 GTX+

NVIDA GeForce 9800 GTX+ Video Card

The NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ graphics card was and still is a hot subject around the internet since it was announced by NVIDIA this past Thursday. The card will not be available to purchase until next month, so enthusiasts and gamers will have to wait for it to arrive if they want one. Many are asking if it is worth the wait as the ATI Radeon HD 4850 is available to purchase today for a reasonable $169.99 plus shipping over at Newegg thanks to a $30 mail-in-rebate. The MSRP on the GeForce 9800 GTX+ is $229, so is the GeForce 9800 GTX+ carries a 35% price premium on top the fact you have to wait to buy one. Our own performance testing showed that the GeForce 9800 GTX+ had a 10.4% performance advantage over the Radeon HD 4850 as you can below.

TomsHardware ATI Radeon HD 4850: Smarter by Design?

Space Siege US

It has been a long time since NVIDIA and ATI released new architectures so close to one another. The last time this happened was in 2004, with the R420 and NV40 launches, and overall the two architectures were extremely similar (six vertex shaders, 16 pixel pipelines, 16 texture units, etc.) Since that time the two companies have followed divergent paths with their architectures, but while they may not have necessarily agreed on technical choices, they both stayed with the concept of monolithic GPUs – with each new generation, the number of transistors have more or less doubled, and then, based on these enormous chips, a full line of cards was produced by varying the number of processing units.

AnandTech NVIDIA’s First 55nm GPU: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

June 24th, 2008 No comments

A very smart man at Intel once told me that when designing a microprocessor you can either build a new architecture, or move to a smaller manufacturing process, but you don’t do both at the same time. The reason you don’t do both is because it significantly complicates the design, validation and manufacturing processes – you want to instead limit the number of variables you’re changing in order to guarantee a quick ramp up and good yields of your silicon.

NVIDIA followed this rule of thumb with the GT200, building its “brand new” (or at least significantly evolved) architecture on a tried-and-true 65nm process instead of starting at 55nm. Despite AMD building both RV670 and the new RV770 GPU on TSMC’s 55nm process, NVIDIA hadn’t built anything on a smaller than 65nm process, including the 1.4 billion transistor GT200.

Shortly after the GT200 launched, AMD “responded” with its Radeon HD 4850, a cheap card by comparison, but a far more interesting one from a practical performance standpoint. Priced at $199 and selling for as little as $170, the Radeon HD 4850 managed to invalidate most of NVIDIA’s product line. In response, NVIDIA dropped the price of its GeForce 9800 GTX to $199 as well and introduced one more card: a $229 GeForce 9800 GTX+.
