Traces of yet unreleased graphics cards have been spotted at Zauba.
NVIDIA GP104, smaller die, more pins
Let’s start with GP104, the GM204 successor, based on Pascal architecture. We are probably looking at first high-end GPU from upcoming 1000 series (the name has not been confirmed). Same as with Kepler and Maxwell, we don’t expect the ‘Big Pascal’ to be released anytime soon. Instead much smaller GPU, that should theoretically be faster than both GTX 980 Ti and TITAN X is expected in the coming months.
According to 3DCenter the GP104 comes in a 37.5×37.5mm BGA package, which is smaller than GM204’s 40x40mm. What’s worth noting is that the listing from Zauba revealed is has more pins (2152), than GM204 (1745). This could be related to much denser architecture based on smaller fabrication node.
NVIDIA GP104 HBM or GDDR5(X)?
3DCenter has a theory that GP104 could actually not use HBM, but GDDR5(X) instead. This would rather be a very strange decision, but could NVIDIA possibly make smaller GPU (than GM204) and still accommodate 4 HBM modules? This theory is not taken from the thin air. The GP100 aka the Big Pascal, would supposedly come in 55x55mm BGA package. That’s 10mm more than GM200, which were probably required for additional HBM modules. Of course those numbers are for the whole package (with interposer), not just the GPU.
It does seem that both GP100 and GP104 will be smaller GPUs than GM200 and GM204 respectively. This is the first branch of FinFET GPUs from NVIDIA, so the time for much higher performance gains (like we had with GM200 compared to GK104) will come later. First Pascal GPUs just need to be faster and more efficient. Of course these are just the first steps in FinFET architecture, it will take time to develop faster graphics cards, but I’m quite sure FinFET will stick around for a while just like 28nm did, so there is no rush.
NVIDIA GP104 with water cooling?
Last but not least, one of the entries lists ‘Water Cooling Lid’. Would that indicate that first GP104 graphics card will be powered by completely new liquid cooled solution? Well, I think we all agree that NVTTM cooler needs a replacement, just to see somethings new.
AMD Polaris GPUs also make an appearance
Moving on to the Red Team. A good chap iLeakStuff from OCN gave me a hint that he found what seem to be first board numbers of Radeon 400 series graphics cards.
The C980 and C981 are likely based on the same chip. What’s interesting the price of C98X boards seems to be higher than Hawaii XT boards (which can also be found on Zauba). This means we are probably looking at first high-end Polaris chips, but not necessarily Fury replacement just yet. Just for clarity, the Fiji boards are C880 (Fury X), C882 (Nano) and C883 (Fury X2).
The C913 and C924 are quite possibly entry-level or mid-range solutions.
