BootDaily Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 in CrossFire
AMD’s new Radeon HD 4870 is poised to kick in the performance afterburners and leave NVIDIA scratching itself, wondering what to do next. This latest GPU from AMD redefines the mid-range price-to-performance ratio – the only reaction NVIDIA can take is to dump its prices to remain competitive.
We posted our review of the Radeon HD 4850 the other day and dubbed it the new king-of-the-hill in regards to a sub-$200 graphics solution. Today, we see the 4870 kicking it up a notch with faster clock rates and the first graphics card in the world to use the latest GDDR5 technology.

At a press event in San Francisco last week, AMD revealed to us this new architecture so it’s been like sitting on pins and needles keeping this to a dull-roar until the embargo lifted. Time and time again, we’ve seen NVIDIA and AMD (in the past) unleash ultra-monstrous, power-hungry GPUs which you could use to melt an igloo. AMD’s updated approach is to make sure it gets bleeding-edge performance into the hands of the majority by introducing NVIDIA-beating price-to-performance products – its new 4870 raises the bar.
