What’s “OG” and “TG” In DirectCU II Cards?,Are Those New Versions Of Overclocked Cards?

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

There are no pictures of those yet. This could mean a bundled game or a backplate.

For instance, ASUS OG model comes with a Borderlands 2 game.

  • Ehmed

    what is backplate need for?

  • Aryan Eimermacher

    They look nicer :P

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

It’s for dual-sided memory chips, better heat dissipation.

  • datguy

nothing. the DC2 V2 is a great cooler, but the backplate is all for show. it doesn’t touch or cool anything and it doesn’t prevent the card from sagging either. DC2Top gtx670 owner.

For me Gigabyte 660 Ti, i like their bios update method and the cooler is quiet, and should be lower priced than ASUS.
2nd Option is Msi PE, their pcb components are very good also.

sorry , which of these is better? :) I dont know to buy which one

I’m really wondering how much that extra gig of RAM is going to help. Considering the 660Ti has meh performance with AA because of it’s RAM and bus width, wouldn’t an extra gig of RAM remedy that? It actually seems like the perfect sweet spot. So for me it’s either a 3 Gb 660Ti, or a 2Gb 670… Can anybody shed some light on how much they think that extra gig will help? Need something to hold me over until reviews come out!

YEs , but MSI , ASUS or GIgabyte ? or no difference?

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

gigabyte wf3x is the best priced one, take asus if you are going to overclock

  • Ehmed

thanks. Giga wf3x can be overlocked too isnt it? So i will get GIGA 3x its price is good.

  • Ehmed

i think 2gb enough for 1080p. what is your resolution ?

  • Pingback: Anonymous

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/KCMPJA72BFQBFWE6QRSVAW6P3Q Joseph

1080p, but as shown at least in the Tweak Town review, for any kind of decent lookign game nowadays, 2Gb on a 192 bit bus barely cuts it. As seen with AvP specifically, the card could barely handle 4x MSAA. just narrowly being abel to keep a steady 42 FPS. That just doesn’t seem like a good value. Granted I prefer to use FXAA considering I don’t notice any blurring that people speak of except for some specific cases, I would still want a $300 card to be able to handle traditional AA in games like Arkham City or BF3. Which it doesn’t look like this card is able to do with only 2 Gb. If however 3 Gb versions of the card fixes that problem for the most part, and does it for only $350, then I’ll have a serious decision to make between that or a 670.

  • thechuck11

I noticed the ZOTAC AMP one at the bottom there says 3gb while you list it as having 2048mb, just wanted to point it out

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Sorry, a typo. It’s a 2GB card. There are only Galaxy and Inno3D cards with this memory size. But others will likely release such cards too.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

    Yes, I own one.
It’s a great card and super quiet. Price is like for reference card. Best offer.
I could overclock it to 1250 MHz (boost clock + kepler boost)

  • Ehmed

that is nice. i will buy in few days :) my current vga is gt430 cant wait for performance difference :D

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

    It’s incomparable.

Also in your opinion HD7950 3GB or GTX 660Ti 2GB?

  • http://www.facebook.com/TheHeartOfAsiaa Pratik Rawankar

    great work by @VideoCardz_com:disqus

detailed and huge info about GPU to date
I am going with GTX 660Ti as soon as it will be available in India and I just cancelled my paid HD7970 gigabyte OC deal
bz NVIDIA perform 20-30% in frostbite 2 powered game

saving money for HD 8970 Unleashed and now waiting hard for LG IPS 7 series monitors bz they are best in features and price and invisible border

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

If your budget is limited to $300 then go with GTX 660 Ti.
But if you own a high-resolution monitor, then wait for HD 7950 to get cheaper.

I would buy HD 7950, GTX 660 Ti performs like 1.5GB card (which was confirmed in few reviews).

  • skr13

“To stay competitive from a memory bandwidth standpoint, NVIDIA needed to use 2GB of GDDR5 but the 192-bit interface presented a challenge. If a standard layout would have been implemented, each of the three available controllers would have been populated by 512MB of memory, resulting in a somewhat paltry 1.5GB. Instead of going this route, the GTX 660 Ti uses a technology pioneered by NVIDIA’s GF116 and by extension the GTX 550 Ti: mixed memory allotments. This allows each channel to be populated by a different memory density and through the use of proprietary dynamic load balancing, the three memory controllers on the GTX 660 Ti’s core can adapt their throughout according to the architecture’s needs. In this case, NVIDIA has equipped two controllers with the standard 2x 256MB allotment while the remaining controller receives a quartet of 256MB modules.” HARDWARECANUCKS

    :D i still havent buy :D now which is recommend ? for 1080p :) i have got 400 dollar budget :)

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

GTX 670 or HD 7950. That depends on many factors, usually games you play.

  • xtco

I can get the old 810 mhz sapphire HD7950 for around 300 euro here where i live in a special promo which is about the price of the 660 ti, I also have a 1080p monitor.
Is it worth it over the 660ti? Thanks.

  • Ehmed

hmm that is interesting. i am not playing multiplayer only playing one game once. so i need minimum 40 fps in all games O.o

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Yes, this is a bargain for €300. Take it :)

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

But what game? If you play only one game, then you look for the best card to handle it.

  • Ehmed

i mean all popular games :)

  • BestJinjo

How much is the MSI Twin Frozr 3 7950? That’s the best overclocking 7950 on the market. If you can find that card, 1100-1200mhz is within your reach at 1.1-1.175V (the upper voltage is actually a stock voltage for a 7970). That’ll be 30-40% faster than a 660Ti. The Sapphire Dual-X should also be a good overclocker.

  • BestJinjo

Not arguing with saving $ for a future GPU upgrade but I think that 20-30% delta is off.

Take a look at 7970 / 7970 OCed vs. 680 / 680 Oced. NV pulls away but barely in Battlefield 3. Remember that AMD fixed BF3 performance starting with Catalyst 12.7. We are already on Cats 12.8:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/radeon-hd-7970-ghz-edition_8.html#sect3

660Ti’s competitor is the 7950 which in a good model (powercolor PCS+, msi twin frozr 3) can hit 1.1-1.2ghz. That leaves 660Ti no chance at all, especially with MSAA.

  • BestJinjo

I love these types of charts. They are SO useful to quickly compare cards. Prices can be found by each person in their respective countries. However, being able to see how 5 Asus 660Tis differ is awesome! Your site is $$ in the bank. I hope you are getting WAY WAY more traffic than 2 months ago.

  • BestJinjo

The Zotac AMP is amazing since it’s only 7.5 inches long.

Check out how it compares to GTX670 Zotac AMP in length. Great little card for a small case:

  • BestJinjo

MSI Power Edition is great for overclocking.
Asus Direct CUII is the quietest.
Gigabyte Windforce 3x is the best balance of the 2 above at the cheapest price.

  • Ehmed

thanks , i dont want to give mroe 100 dollar to gtx 670 , i think 660ti enough for 1080p. but i dont know what for future O.o

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com
  • BestJinjo

Oh wow, so 300 euro for the 660Ti or 315 euro for the MSI TF3 7950? No brainer right there. 7950 @ 1.1-1.2ghz will breeze over 660Ti OCed. TF3 has 80%+ Asic rating, cream of the crop overclocking 7950 chips in those.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Yes, quite easy to judge, thanks to the link you posted from 3Dcenter, we have a very good overview of the performance. It’s really worth to pay extra €15 for a better card and I’m pretty sure that HD 7950 will receive another price drop. There is a clear winner here.

GTX 660 Ti only wins on 1920×1080 resolution with 4xAA. All other benches are in favour of HD 7950.

  • tbschen

Humm, I want a fast GPU for my mini gaming pc.
I planned to buy a 660Ti because it has less power consumption than a 670. It’s not much though, so I thought, why not buy the 670 and undervolt, possibly underclock it, I still have the 256bit interface that way, which’d be good for higher quality settings. I don’t mind the few € more, I want it cool and silent.
It’s possible to underclock it a bit, right? Any thoughts about my idea?

  • Bruno

I do not understand why everyone says that 660ti gtx is faster and much better than amd 7950. I saw youtube coments that said it was better was even better than 7970. Many people are blind.

  • skr13

    UPDATE:GXT 660 Ti vs HD 7950 B:
    http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7950-with-boost-review/1

Some games better on NVIDIA, like BF3, BF BC2 and others like AVP or Metro2033 favor AMD.
“The R7950 BOOST graphics cards should be available as separate SKU in the stores and should be priced similar to the ‘old’ model which is roughly 349 EUR” Thats expensive…
They did not refer the increase of power consumption compared to Ref 7950 and GXT 660 Ti.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

I think there’s nothing new there, we wouldn’t already know.
€349 Price for 7950B is a joke, everyone can overclock the card and spare 50 EUR….

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Buying a better card to underclock and have the performance of GTX660 TI?
You should notice that almost every gamer is overclocking not underclocking.
If the main factor is TDP, then there is no sense in this purchase, if you expect the card to be silent then go with Gigabyte’s WindForce 3X.
And by the way, you do realize that Kepler cards have at least three modes of gpu clock speed? In Windows card is using ~320 MHz clock. It only jumps to higher clock if needed.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

It’s marketing. Look how AMD announces their card and how NVIDIA does. NVIDIA puts many videos, marketing materials on their website, while AMD is quite boring with their press releases only.

  • skr13

Nothing new, but every review are good to show some AMD fans, that 7950 isn´t better, neither GXT 660 Ti, just depends what games are tested.
Where i live most of 7950 cost more than €350 with 800MHz clock.
But the fact is 7950 B consumes more and cost more than GXT 660 Ti.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Yeah both cards win in different games. But 7950 wins with higher resolution. For my readers where most use 1920x1080p GTX 660 Ti is a better solution.

So the Radeon HD 7950 is better solution for only 2% (8% if we count 19×12) of my readers :)

Well, I assumed it can still have a better performance (not much), even though I underclock it. Yes, I barely found anything about underclocking the GPU (on purpose), I know it makes little sense in most cases. Well, it’s not power consumption, but the heat it creates, as said, it’s a smaller form factor than most Gaming PCs would have and I know how short the PCB of these two cards is. I don’t plan to underclock it when the temperatures and noise generation are fine, but just in case it goes too warm (that’s why I asked if it’s possible).

About these clock speeds, can I customize them, so they won’t go higher than I want?

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

    Yes you can.
    EVGA Precision X for instance.

  • tbschen

Thanks, it’s been a while since my last nVidia card and I wasn’t really into over/underclocking before.

  • skr13

320×480 are mobile phone users right?
In this moment i use 1440×900 with my Nvidia G210 ;)
I´m expecting some price drops on AMD side but is time Nvidia make some cuts too.

  • BestJinjo

Marketing. People think BF3 is the only game that counts…..they ignore immense overclocking potential of 7950 even though GTX460 had it as well. Hype that Kepler is an overall better chip this generation. AMD drivers were not very good until June. Since then 7970 GE is the fastest card in the world but the average person probably still thinks that NV has the fastest cards this round.

  • BestJinjo

Well keep in mind that 7950 has real 3GB of VRAM and it has 30-40% overclocking headroom and it can actually handle 8x MSAA even at 1080P. Then you have some new games coming out that use DirectCompute shaders for lighting and contact hardening shadows such as Dirt Showdown, Sniper Elite V2, Sleeping Dogs. In those games, AMD will have a large advantage over the 660Ti. Actually if we consider overclocking, 7950 is more of a competitor to the 670, not 660Ti.

  • BestJinjo

I think for 1440×900, GTX650 or a used GTX560Ti 448 is all you need. No reason to spend 300 euro on a card for your rez. Heck even GTX560Ti will do.

  • skr13

LOL, i´m not on my PC, main gaming rig remains off for 3 months due no graphics card, it has 1920×1080 resolution monitor.
You think if i use this 1440×900 will buy a 300 euro card :)
1080p with AA was the main cause to replace my 560Ti, in Dirt 3 for example at max settings uses peak 989MB Vram, so my 560Ti was at limit.
But 660 Ti is expensive 340 EUR 915MHz Asus DC II.
    7950 Cost about 350 EUR 880MHz MSI TF3.

If I may, Skr13 where do you live?

  • skr13

    Portugal=crisis :(
    and you?

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

Ok, I thought you might consider ordering the card from some German store.
    I live in Poland

    Have you considered VTX3D?
    http://www.pixmania.com/pt/pt/12623111/art/vtx3d/radeon-hd-7950-x-edition.html

  • skr13

I have already saw this card, and 7870 VTX3D, but don´t know about warranty and support of this brand.
My 560 TI Top was purchased here in Pixmania :)
But i have to pay more 10.99EUR for transport…
German store? I don´t know what kind of Tax i have to pay.

  • http://videocardz.com/ VideoCardz.com

In European Union there are no additional taxes, you only cover the shipping.
Maybe Amazon.co.uk has something to offer, we have Super Saver free shipping for more than 25 pounds.

  • skr13

Yes we have free shipping but converting GBP to EUR makes cards expensive.
    I haven´t played Max payne 3, Dirt showdown, Sniper Elite v2… stupid G210 :)
Maybe is better wait till end of month and see if AMD drop prices.
    Thanks for help anyway.

    Well I always use google
Type “100 gbp to euro” or “100 dollars to yuan” and so on.

    @BestJinjo:disqus solid copy man

completely agree with 7970 GHz world’s fastest GPU

but AMD is too much late to fix it , bz Frostbyte 2 powered games on NVIDIA is todays best dealing news in many place

I saw GTX 660ti in INDIA at 455 $ including bloody taxes
    just 7 days to go

Does he have his own store or has a super-computer that runs projects for a university using CUDA? That’s $37K of GPUs….haha!

  • BestJinjo

Have you thought about HD7970 MSI Twin Frozr 3? It’s just £11 more than the MSI GTX660Ti Power Edition
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-gtx-660-ti-power-edition-oc-28nm-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-1019mhz-boost-1097mhz-cores-1344-2x-dl-dv

    vs.

    £269.75

This 7950 hits 1100-1150mhz , with less than 1.175V, possibly 1200mhz. Performance > GTX680/HD7970 Ghz Edition at those speeds!! This is the highest binned 7950 chip I am aware of. Everyone I’ve seen gets these cards with 80%+ ASIC which is very high for a 7950 chip. Mad overclockers on HD7970 PCB with 6+8 pin power connector.

It’ll be super fast in Sniper Elite V2 and Dirt Showdown:
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/geforce-gtx-660-ti_10.html#sect3

  • BestJinjo

How much is a 670 or MSI TwinFrozr 3 7950 over there?

  • skr13

£269.7=343 EUR, thats way too expensive for me, usually i don´t pay more than 250 EUR for a card, and this time i increase max value to 300 EUR, anything above is out of option.
Even GTX 660 Ti for 325 is too much, thinking to keep the card for 2 years.
Dirt 3 is better in Nvidia Dirt Showdown is better an AMD.
    Thanks anyway for tip.

  • BestJinjo

Among those the 670 AMP sounds like the best deal. That card isn’t the quietest 670 though. Look at Asus DirectCUII 670 or Gigabyte Windforce 670.

Also, I asked you about the 7950 vs. 660Ti, not about 7970 :)

7950 is basically an underclocked 7970 with a bit less shaders and textures. Otherwise, it’s more or less the same card as the 7970. This is why it can be a great value if you can find it for cheap and don’t mind overclocking it.
