AMD To Drop Catalyst Support For HD 2000, HD 3000 and HD 4000 Series

UPDATE: This information is wrong, please refer to this post for more accurate info. According to Phoronix AMD will drop Catalyst support for pre-HD 5000 Radeon Series. This will happen around the time of releasing Catalyst 12.7 driver — which can be expected in Summer.

If you are still using one of those prehistoric graphics cards (I’m joking — they are only 4 year old sic!) then you might consider upgrading it to new GPU. It seems that AMD does everything they can to make you buy one of those shinny Tahiti cards. This is somehow funny, because NVIDIA still supports GeForce 6000 Series which were released in 2004 and AMD drops support for HD 4000 series from 2008.

Another reason why NV is better for those who keep cards long-term. Dropping HD4870/4890 series is insane considering those cards can still play a lot of games with settings turned down at lower resolutions. Just another $ grabbing way to get people to upgrade. Maybe AMD should spend $ to work closer with developers to make sure DX11 games look better so that we actually want to upgrade. I own a much more modern card, but still a shame to see AMD drop support for perfectly viable hardware.

Won’t be a problem for now, but sure Win 8 won’t have the driver support. Worse, for people using Linux with those “legacy” cards this is an instant disaster. At least NVIDIA is still updating legacy drivers so they can be used on newer Linux kernels.

NVidia’s image have been shaken lately so AMD should try to use it and create a positive image for itself and they do THIS instead. F..k you AMD, you retards.
