Seen up and running last month, AMD’s Trinity mobile APUs (accelerated processing unit) are set to go into volume production as soon as January 2012 so as to be ready for a Q2 launch. It’s still unclear when the chips will launch but it seems they’ll be able to debut close to Intel’s Ivy Bridge.

The Trinity mobile APUs are made on 32nm process technology, have a TDP of up to 35W and feature up to four Piledriver cores (Piledriver is expected to be 10% to 15% faster than Bulldozer), a built-in DDR3-2133 memory controller, up to 4MB of L2 cache, and Radeon HD 7000 series integrated graphics (with DirectX 11 support). Trinity is part of the Comal platform which is the successor of Sabine.

Further down the line, in 2013, Trinity will be replaced by the Kaveri APUs which will make use of Steamroller x86 cores and may adopt a new manufacturing process (22nm?). Big plans, let’s just hope things stay on schedule.
