PCI-SIG is developing a new specification for PCI Express 3.0
PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) – the group behind the PCI specifications – has made available this week information on the proposed performance standards viewed the latest PCI Express. The new PCI Express 3.0, briefly PCIe 3.0, will be able to boast 8-GT / s (gigatransferów per second), twice higher than the PCIe 2.0.
Designing a PCIe 3.0, PCI-SIG group has set to improve productivity, but you asked yourself hard to maintain kompatybilość retroactive to devices PCIe and PCIe 2.0. What’s more, thanks to some of the improvements and the resignation of the 8b/10b encoding, managed to double the bandwidth efficiency compared to the previous PCIe 2.0, although nominally the transfer suddenly increased by 60%. According to the group PCI-SIG, 8b/10b encoding devoured up to 20% capacity. PCIe 3.0 standard also includes new procedures for the transmission of signals and maintaining consistency of the data.
“Backward compatibility is one of the stronger points of all our specifications. With it, our customers can switch to the new standard, with certainty, that if the machine to which you can insert both older and newer devices “- said łamach interview on Al Yanes, chairman and head of the supervisory board of PCI-SIG . “Backward compatibility will be retained in the new standard 8 GT / s”.
Connector PCIe 3.0 is still under development and should not be expected to have its premiere earlier than in 2009. According to Yanesa, adoption of the new standard by the computer comes in the second half of the period 2010-2011. It is difficult to ascertain exactly which companies will support PCIe 3.0, but around 900 members of the group of PCI-SIG is actively interested in new technology.
“Businesses related to computer graphics has always strongly supported PCI Express and first began to use the new connector generation” – says Yanes. “This time will probably similar. We assume that PCIe 3.0, you may count on strong support from this page. ”
As is apparent from the expression Yanesa, a group of PCI-SIG is not enough, that the new standard will be twice faster than PCIe 2.0. Are being developed further extension of the protocol, so that PCIe 3.0 will become not only more efficient but cost-effective.
“Put a lot of work in order to strongly increase the PCI Express connectors and reduce delays in data transmission” – added Yanes.
The provision of official PCIe 3.0 specifications can be expected in 2009.
